It can be a little difficult at first to gain your new pet rabbit’s trust but with a little persistence, patience and determination it can be done. The truth of the matter is that rabbits naturally have a prey instinct. They are constantly being preyed upon by larger animals in the wild so this type of behavior is also very prevalent in domestic rabbits as well. The main thing to remember is that in order to gain your rabbit’s total trust in you, you must convince him that you have no intention of harming him. So how do we prove this to our little rabbit friend?
First, never be harsh when you discipline him. They are unable to understand a loud or hitting approach and will confuse your actions as that of the enemy. The right way to discipline him is to use the positive reinforcement approach when you’re training your rabbit how to mind you.
Second, move steady and slow. Fast, choppy movements are very similar to that of a predator and you’ll only end up scaring the life out of your rabbit. Move at a slow, even pace and whatever you do, never chase your rabbit. If he’s not running away from you try using his favorite toy or favorite snack to coax him back to you.
Third, use a soft tone of voice when speaking to your bunny. Never use a loud tone of voice around him. This will only scare him. Talk to him in a gentle, soft voice and reassure him that everything is ok.
And last, always feed him at the right times. In a rabbit’s mind, the safest times to avoid predators while eating is in the early hours of the morning and at dusk. Be sure to give him his main meals during these times of the day. He’ll appreciate you for it and overall be a more relaxed, stress free bunny.
